Old 5 speed with modern gears

My old frame has (or will have) 27" Campag 5 speed wheels. I have a 1977 Super record chainset, but I'm having big trouble getting the right BB.

A couple of things crossed my mind. What about a modern chainset, a 9 speed rear mech and friction bar end shifters? running over the 5 speed freewheel.

Or. Does anyone have any actual experience in finding a bottom bracket to fit the old Super Record?
Apparently old ones were asymmetrical and new ones are symmetrical

Towards the end of campyoldy's stock list there is a shimano 7400 112 mm bottom bracket. Did campag cranks fit these ?

One small problem with using a 9-speed rear mech is that you will need a suitably thin 9-speed chain to fit through the jockey plates. The thinner chain will need a bit more encouragement to move onto the next sprocket when you change gear as it won't catch the teeth so well on the widely spaced 5-speed freewheel.

As it happens the second item down on Hilary's list is the bottom bracket I bought off him months ago. They do seem to be a bit thin on the ground. You can try looking out for Gipiemme, Ofmega, Galli and Omas brackets on eBay as they made faithful copies of the Campag ones. They might tend to be 114.5mm though rather 112mm. To be honest 1.5mm extra on the drive side and 1mm on the non-drive side might not be a big issue.

That Austrian one is expensive compared to what I paid Hilary so if you can wait I'm sure he'll get another one in at some point.

Aha, I was just on there looking for a Campag one but fogot about the "Other manufacturers" section. The Shimano won't be any good as the tapers are different. What is worth a look though is this:

GIPIEMME Strada 68 BB axle 112mm appears same dimensions as Camp pre-78 68-SS-120

£15 for the bare axle. It could be worth getting that and looking out for cups elsewhere.

Tifosi and Miche make 112mm ISO (campag) BB.

They are not too expemsive.
