Nuovo Record front mech clearance

I am just about to fit a late 70's Nuovo Record front mech to my Dave Lloyd and I only want to do this job once, as the front mech is quite tight to the seat tube and the frame is freshly painted.

What is the recommended clearance between the mech and the chain ring?

Most bikes I go with around a 3 mm or so gap between the top of the chainring and the outer frame of the mech.

BITD there was a sort of competition as to how close we could get the cage of the mech to the chainring, got silly in the end :). 2-3 mm is pretty good looking to me :)

If you are only doing it once it's more important to choose the outer chainring you are happy with as its going to be there forever unless you move the mech.

Seems like you are on the downhill leg with the bike :D

Re:

I'm happy to leave the chainrings as they are. They might get renewed in the future, but as I have very little choice in sizes, I may as well live with what I have and make any minor changes at the other end of the drive train.

The BB was the real hold up, apart from bar end plugs and a chain, both of which I can get from my local shop, it is just a matter of cleaning components and assembling (famous last words).

I may end up getting a new block, as I'm not certain what the Titalist rear mech can cope with, but I suspect I'm about to find out.

I ran a Titlist on my 70's TT bike, in fact here's a pic of the very mech suitably lightened by way of some serious filing. I had got bored of drilling holes :)

I'm sure I ran it with a 28 rear cog when I had the same mech on my Falcon Road bike?

Re:

All that filing... that's as bad as me trimming off all the bolts to one thread beyond tight on my Formula Ford's and also boring some of the bolts that had very little load. I recon on a car that weighed around 1100kg I must have saved at least 3 or 4 grammes.

I'll be delighted if the mech will handle a 28 tooth sprocket, as that is what I have.

Blimey, I'd love to have played at Formula Ford.

The nearest I got was a 400BHP plus methanol injected Impreza. Like you I lightened it, mainly with Carbon. I'm sure the Ganador Mirrors added a few MPH for the £400 :)

The Titlist was a great mech, don't be afraid to run it with a link longer than you would with a Campag :)

Re:

Nice mota!

I did some road rallying before I went track racing. I wasn't bad at rallying, but it was so expensive. Stage rallying is worse.

FF was fun; I've always been quicker in saloon cars, but you need to own a body shop to keep them smart / straight.

I got the Titalist in an ebay job lot of mechs, the whole lot cost me a fiver.

Titlist should take 28t without a problem. It was one of the first 'modern generation' rear mechs with lots more 'spring' etc. I had one as I couldn't afford a Dura-Ace and it did me well over winters for several years.

I fitted a FF 1500cc first generation motor (pre cross flow) into my Anglia in 1969. The guy I bought it from had just built it when Ford introduced the crossflow 1600. I think he was a bit 'peeved' to say the least!

Re:

A well built FF1600 would produce about 105 BHP, as the amount of tuning allowed was minimal and all the internals had to be factory standard, as was the inlet manifold.

You could balance all the internal bits and match the manifold to the head, and back when I was racing that would cost anywhere between £2,500 and £4,000 and the pro's had four engines on the go.

I raced at Castle Coombe and then later in the pre-85 championship, but it lost it's shine when a guy was killed racing for 3rd place in the CC championship and a couple of guys got pretty well hurt in Pre-85, after all, it was supposed to be fun.

So I went motorcycle hillclimbing instead, on a Triumph 750cc which I built from scratch (damn useful stuff that scratch, you can build all sorts with it).

Front mech fitted, rear mech in place, current puzzle are the Shimano 600 clamp on friction shifters.

Wow, I would have loved to have done that :). My impreza was fettled by Roger Clark Motorsport when they were at Peckleton Hall. Not a cheap option :)

Kids getting older and then the horse put an end to that, having said that I'd rather have had Billy the tobiano cobb ridden by Lucy than a monster car :)
