Non-retro question about Shimano Shadow rear mech.

Can anyone tell me why the GS short cage rear mech is only recommended for use with single/double chainring set-ups?

Ok, I know that it wll obviously not wrap enough chain to allow me to run small/small while having a long enough chain to run large/large but who does this anyway.? I've been running short cage XT rear mechs on triple chainsets for years (taking these restrictions into account and running an appropriate length of chain) and it's never caused me any problems.

At the moment I'm running the long cage Shadow mech and while it does the job well it's so long that it just looks damn ugly in my opinion. Has anyone here used the GS version with a triple set-up?

I reckon it'll be fine - should be just what you said - manufacturers tend to be pretty cautious about 'idiot disclaimers' - then it can't be their fault if someone has a problem.

I'd go for it - just watch the obvious extreme gears, (but you wouold anyway eh?)

I thought they didnt make a short version arm, only a medium cage. medium would be fine.

Yeah - they do a long and medium version . However, even the medium version is for some reason not recommended for use with a triple chainset.

run so the chain is slack in granny & smallest cassette cog (who uses this gear aside from chavs anyway? )... or more sensibly make sure the chains long enuff to run big/big (which will mean its slack in small/small with a med length mech. add a few links more for XC FS

What do Shimano know. I have short cage. Its more medium to my eyes. Wouldn't worry about it.
