I seem to remember reading a book where he and a relative rode from india into the himalyas on stripped down racing bikes - luggage set up was a sawn off toothbrush, thong and face flannel in a bottle cage affair. Found it an inspiring at the time (1980's probably)

i remember seeing a bit on a documentery about cycling
bbc one ,bloke riding thru the sahara i think , he had a picture of his girlfriend taped to his credit card and a toothbrush

anyone else remember then series 5 or 6 episodes at half an hour each

Yep around 1985, "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" with his cousin Richard. From the point on the coast (in Bangladesh) to the point the furthest from the coast in the world (Mongolia I think). Was Nick Crane him that was something to do with the creation of Saracen cycles ?

Saracen I think I heard was named such because of a bike wanted to ride across the Sahara, hence early Saracens named after conquests of stuff, Killi as in Killimanjaro, Conquest and Sahara, self explanatory.

Or have I got my wires crossed somewhere.

Anyway I had heard Nick Crane was a serious weight weenie.

Aye- I remember the run across the Himalayas thang they did.........only utensil was a spoon, with the handle shortened- same with the toothbrush.......that's some serious weeniage there.
