Hi - I fairly new to the retro bike seen and not really been into bikes for over 20 years so doing some catching up

I'm restoring my Orange Ali Elite

Thinking about a new pair of wheels

Are vee brake and canti brake 26 inch wheels the same, also I'm assuming I cant use disc wheels

Thanks for any replies

Hi

Welcome to retrobike. I think the rims are the same, the mountings for the brakes are the same but the levers are different as they amount of cable they need to pull is is different between canti's and v brakes.

You can't use discs as they need dedicated hubs and mounts on your frames and forks. There are some conversion kits knocking about but some say that a disc frame needs to be stronger in the right places etc.

Depending what you are doing v brakes are pretty reasonable.

Hope that helps

They are indeed the same. The only thing that will stop you running discs would be frame and fork disc mounts. If you have them, no problem, if not you can get adapters for your frame but you would need new forks if they don't have them really (you can get hope adapters but a new fork would be easier). Then you'd need new wheels and disc brakes of course.
