I'm after a little help from you knowledgable guys.

i have just acquired a raleigh team banana (18-23 before anyone asks) so i'm not planning to spend loads but just make it a useable winter hack.

the back wheel is shot due to rust on the rim.

i have a mavic g40 rim which is in good nick so i would like to use this but upgrade the cassette as the one currently fitted to it is not good for the hills around derbyshire where i live.
this is the cassette i currently have on the g40 but i'm not sure what type of fitment it is.

any ideas what i need to buy to replace it. i'm looking for 7 speed - probably 12-28T or similiar.

thanks in advance for any help

These aren't cassettes, they're freewheels. I'm not saying that to be pedantic, if you buy a cassette it won't do.

If you take the two wheels to a bike shop they should be able to swap the freewheels over in minutes- they should be interchangeable.

You'll have to watch if you are thinking of more gears, it doesn't look as if there is room for more on that wheel. You can get 6 speed freewheels that are the same width as a conventional 5, that's probably the best option here.

thanks for the reply.

I can simply swap the freewheel from the old wheel to the mavic but the 7 speed may not fit? is that correct?

Yep, should be able to swap the old block (AKA freewheel) to the new Mavic .....Take an LBS about ten mins. I count six cogs on both blocks.

7 speed will need something like a Suntour Ultra 7 which is a bit of a faff to find......as is the matching chain.

ok lovely thanks for your help. i'll stick with 6 speed for now then. banana gears look to have more teeth than others so i will just have to man up and grind up them hills.

thanks for your help

I cycled up the Crow Road at The Campsies today on the fixed wheel, a Cat4 clime that is 1.6 miles long according to Strava. Last time I cycled it (which was my first time ever) in August was on a compact geared bike and I was in the granny gear, took me 14.5 minutes to complete the 1.6 miles. Today on the single speed it took me just over 10 minutes, makes me wonder if I should sell the gears and stick with single speeds

My Avatar is me on Spout Hill on a Hill climb competition......not fixed gear but there was no chance of changing gear :)
