Narrow Wheel Axle?

I have to replace a missing narrow front axle on an old 1940's Macleans bike, it won't accept a 9mm being just a bit too wide so would anyone know the Imperial width needed?

Front axle would be 5/16 x 26 tpi. Standard on most British bikes for many years.

Just for info, if you take a file and carefully file the threads down on both sides it will go into the dropout. Don't go any further than the threads though.

yep, just file two flats on the spindle Just make sure that the flats on the other side are the same direction or it won't go into the dropout

.....thanks for the tips gents, I had thought of filing but thought I'd try eBay first for a correct size axle and found one straightaway so fingers crossed the build will be ready for riding before Christmas
