Hi, just bought a Shimano IG51 narrow chain off ebay very cheap to use on a 1996/7 Saracen Terratrax which has an acera cassette and chainset, then i started wondering whether it would fit, are the narrow chains just for 9 speed or will it be ok?

whoa there! they used to describe 7 speed as narrow! so 96/7 could be anything, but more likely 7/8 speed and not 9! Nine chains won't work on 8 as they get trapped between the front rings!
