My early 60's bike

Old Ned

Old School Grand Master
As I've been sorting through my old negatives I found this shot taken in 1962 during a day out with a mate of mine that took us from Wrexham, Llangollen, Corwen, Betwys-y-coed, Blaunau Festiniog, Bala, and back through Corwen and Llangollen again. A grand day out at 15 years of age! This photo was taken of Gerald and myself in BF and it's the best one that shows the bike. The leg is mine.

A Viking Severn Valley, pale blue with flam red contrasts, Cinelli Steel bars and stem (wish I had them now!), Williams steel chainset, Campag Gran Sport gearing, Mafac brake levers with Milremo stirrups (very rare now), self-butchered Brooks saddle on a Campag pin (luxury!!) - and a dirty great ice cream advert banner to wrap spare tubs in. This would be a typical 'clubmans' bike of the period, a general mix of components acquired as and when, and used for everything from going to work and clubruns to time trialling and road racing.

I've still got that Campagnolo bottle somewhere!

And the yellow Campagnolo 'bonk bag' I'm holding.

Life was somewhat simpler then.....................

Viking relaunched the Severn Valley just as I went to Uni in 1978....Campag also relaunched the Gran sport that year IIRC but only to builders like viking to put on their bikes.

Bit a a pain as the Gran sport was really a Campag record copy with a few changes (polished chainset instead of anodised, no rubber bits on the brakes, steel cages for the rear mech) step back a few feet and it looked the real deal :)

I've got a 70's bonk bag somewhere :D
