Modern rear mechs

Is it right that you can use a 9-speed rear mech on a 7-speed setup?

What about a 7-speed on a 9-speed?

All the same. As long as the cage is long enough for the largest cog.

And Sram 3 is pretty low end stuff - Shimano Alivio or lower.

Anyway my 2c worth. Been using Shimano for years and years, works great, lasts well, changes fine. No worries.

'Experts' tell me Sram mountain bike stuff is good, road stuff is not. Or was that the other way round?

Not a fan of shadow mechs and long cage stuff....IMO pretty fugly.

nowt - short cage is good for less chain slap and smaller cogs / ratios.

Personally I've never bothered, if it shifts it works, it stays.

Some people swear by them - easier to get a low gear quickly.
Never tried myself, but tempted to try sometime as they are often much cheaper from shops - presumably old stock that doesn't sell.

I could be wrong but rapid rise has the habit of meeting the spokes in an indecent manner that often results in a nasty argument

That would make a bit of sense - the tension in the mech pulling it into a dicey position.
If something is going to go wrong, it probably will.
