8spd rear mech works..
The Shimano RD-M740 eight speed rear derailleurs work fine on 9-speed rear ends also. It's also a much better looking rear dearailleur because it's not all painted. The cage is polished.

8 and 9spd compat
I have found running an 8 speed chain through a 9 speed mech with shimano shifters ends up with rub at both ends of the block as the forks are just too narrow and catch. Not a problem with gripshift shifters though with the interim notch positions allowing adjustment on the fly.
