What are people thoughts on mix & matching stem and bars?

e.g. 3ttt stem with Cinelli bars etc ...

My first thought was "assuming the diameters match, no problem" but then my OCD kicked in and I thought "no, it can't possibly work, you will always want to change the 3ttt to a Cinelli".

Mark.

ttt stem may not fit Cinelli bars. IME Cinelli stem with ttt bars needed Coke can shim and was then fine, apart from the mismatch. Best check Velobase.

i would want to keep the same unless it was a hack/commuter or a temp measure.
then i think, did this ever happen in the pro peleton which would make it kind of ok .
i mean for some one sticking rockshoc forks on a lemond glx how wierd would that have been
were it not for ' paris roubaix 93'[i think the date is right]
printed deda bar tape with another make h bar i ditched even though i wanted that particular shade.
[pre retrobike i dont think i would of cared so thanks a bunch you guys :D ]

As long as the stem clamp matches the bar diameter its not an issue unless the insult to your sense of aesthetics is too much to be born. I've seen many mismatched bar stem combos over the years. Since most of the bar is covered in tape and the branding on most vintage bars/stems is pretty subtle you can get away with it.

i think it depends on the bike and availability and if you care about correctness.
and i would'nt have a clue about french stuff or really old stuff.so you could easily wool pull me there.
my stuff was straight forward but still a rareish opportunity even for 1994.for bars/stem/post.
any way something tells me montello has a situation,a controversy and im sure all will
be revealed.

montello, please do bury the hatchet and come out to play. differences of opinion
mean nothing.'no grudge nor strife,no charge of rule, nor governance.'
i was looking at 'vintage steel bikes' in berlin and they have a number of bikes
priced , well say 1000 e and up. and i saw a bike there with a shimano dura ace stem
and 3t's h bars and i just thought about this thread and i just thought it looked wrong.
whilst realising of course that dura ace bars could cost 200. i reckon they should have
searched and found generic bars as the build is koga pure jap .
as for you dirt terpedo and the other chap i am now adding you to my list of enemies
