Mid cage mechs

What generally are the recommended upper sprocket sizes for mid cage rear mechs? Its an old XT if that helps.

My modern X9 is happy with a 32. But i think it may stretch to a 34 Im sure Sheldon will know....... not really helpful but most modern Shimano's will go up to 34. Surely the simple question is how big a spocket are you trying to use

Normally the same as the long cage versions. The total capacity varies with the length of the cage, but the biggest sprocket depends on the slant of the parallelogram, and that doesn't change from one to the other.

Cool, good point OEJ, will need to do some further research. The problem being I don't have all the bits yet, mainly chainset.
