Merlin Head Badge vs Decal Question

I see some bikes with metal head badges and some with decals.

Why the difference? Was it an extra one could order or was it only on certain years?

i've been told the metal head badge is an option that was available from Merlin separate from the frame. also been told they are not easy to come by.

Different era! ...Metal badges were used from about 1998 /1999 onwards
