mavic chainset question

just bought/won a mavic starfish chainset on evilbay, never had one before, always wanted one as i think they are one of the most beautiful chainsets ever made.

haven't decided what to do with it yet, whether it will replace something on a current build or be the first part of a new bike but either way info would be good.

what's the correct year(s) for this model, i thought early 90's?

the main thing i will need to know is what b/b axle length works with these chainsets and does it have to be mavic? i know campag and shimano didn't mix to well because the tapers are slightly different but i have no clue about mavic either way.

I've got one and use a standard Shimano UN51 BB in 113mm. To get the chainline spot-on I put a 3mm spacer on the drive-side cup.

Works fine and yes, looks great

That model came in in 1989, and was superseded in about 1994 by the similar 631/2. There's a date code (year and month) on the back of each arm.

Tapers are ISO (Campag).

I think it's safe to assume 9306 is June 1993.

The 24 may simply be the day, but I've also seen codes with letters at the end (e.g. 9306EE) and four-digit codes (e.g. 9306).

i had assumed the 93 was the year, trust the french to do it all different though

I have one, but one of the chainring studs is seized in the back of the arm and was damaged trying to get it out using a stud extractor - suggest you dismantle and regrease the threads to save yourself future trouble. Lovely chainsets, but fairly hefty by modern standards.

Tapers are ISO (Campag).

Now I'm not saying you're wrong - I think it's most likely you are right going by the symptoms of my own, sat on a Royce JIS BB. I was trying to find that out forever and all I found suggested it was JIS.

Where did you find the info?

And who wants to swap a 111 Royce JIS BB for 113 ISO? Or BSA Campag Athena sealed BB cups for Ital?

I made some measurements of a MAVIC axle, a Campag axle, and a Shimano JIS axle, and compared the depth of taper engagement on a NOS set of 631 cranks.

I'm away from home, and I don't have the figures with me. Perhaps to be more precise I should have said "ISO - or as near as makes no difference."
