MAVIC 230 TIB - What year/years were these introduced?

We went through so thing similar (you can use mombat timeline of course, they are usually the end of year release dates on there, E. G if it say 1992, it is often the 1993 model, so end of 1992 release).

Anyway, you'll find stuff in here I hope, before we went of on some obscure mavic rim :)

Or short... 1994 & 1995 definitely.
1993, not sure. 1996 onwards can't remember, doubt it.

Ha! That's within a margin of error for a 91 bike, then!

Cheers @FluffyChicken

And thanks for the link to the other thread, too...

The set above is available for a bargain, but I'm not sure where these fall in the Mavic lineup in terms of quality and durability. I've read mixed reviews online, so need to dig a bit deeper.

They are top end, level with M231s of the era, the lighter weight race rim.
Fragile and made of tin foil. You will dint them*, they don't tend to snap.

*as in curb, rock type dints so both rim edges flattened in a bit.

They would be a later weenie upgrade for a 1991 bike, quite possibly two years later when your original RM20s/M231/narrow Campag rims have warn.

they were out in the 93 year. Quality - middling. they were'n their highest end, but were specced on some pretty decent £1500+ bikes.

Durability... not so much... and yes, I have a set...

Hmmm...

So all this is keeping me on the fence, especially for their intended home.

Which is the 1991 Brodie, with some very fancy hubs I'd prefer not to need to re-lace after a year of moderate riding!

That said, it won't be seeing too much heavy trail action. I'd like to keep to Brodie as a low-impact rider, if I can.

Still, $70CAD for an NOS pair seems like a deal worth having, even for another project.

My 230TIB black label are from 1995, have done me just fine on my low impact ride, the rigid 1996 Orange P7, which I think were stock option BITD.

I think that price seems about right, I’ve seen a few sets NOS around the £70 or £80 English, not much more. Not seen your older green label versions though.

Also case you didn’t know: TIB = Titanium Bronze colour anodising

i get all my Mavic info from this catalogue archive: https://www.disraeligears.co.uk/site/mavic_catalogue_1994_-_page_12.html

Buy and build.
I used them and still have them.

TIB and SBP.

They work and do their job, they are just not as strong as others. But perfect for your use and most people's.

Side note, one the TIB wears off (similar with SBP) on the brake surface, they brake even better.
Same for most of these rims, that why they started to machine the brake surfaces of rims.

They are light but pretty fragile even over normal old school xc. My ‘95 Pine Mountain came with them OEM when it arrived from Santa.

They had to be trued every few weeks - literally- and the side walls eventually wore down to the point that the LBS refused to true them up again. Replaced with 217s. Far superior rim.

That being said.. I do have a couple of NOS 230s lying around.. you know, just in case 😊
