Marin palisades trail 1992

Retro Newbie
Hi everyone I am new to the group, I have just purchased an old Marin palisades trail (1992 I think) I’m just wondering what options I have available, would something like this be beneficial to fully nut and bolt restore? I’d enjoy doing something like that whilst we are in the Coronavirus lockdown but is it worth just leaving it as it is? It has everything there it could just do with a freshen up etc. Has anyone else had one of these? I picked it up at a good price so have money to spend on the restoration of it if it’s viable.

Hi there, welcome to Retrobike.
Looks like it’s pretty original from the pic, but difficult to tell from one picture. Still I would first examine the cables, gears, make sure none of the parts are seized. Grease any bearings. Assess for any play, check brake blocks.. just a general overhaul. Before you know it you will get the retro bug and have a whole stable of bikes! Anyway nice looking bike:)

Re:

Looks nice from the picture mate, probably need to see close-ups of the components, pictures.... we love close up pictures & plenty of them!

Ho.... and welcome to RB...

[/color]Hi thanks, I have been on here a few times to get general advice on things but have never set an account and posted. Yes I will upload more pictures soon, it is all very original and all works, cables are free brakes all ok, gears shift nice the only thing that lets it down is the overall visual of the bike. I hope someone can share some light on here as to how much it would be worth :D

More pics...

Overall looks pretty good and original, minus the original tyres, saddle? The muirwoods was the low end Marin. In terms of group set. I think to a Marin collector maybe 75-100 pounds best. I sold an 1992 Marin Eldridge grade, original spec XT, Dx and in very good condition for £150 as reference. Hope this helps

Re:

Hello.

I had one upto a year or so ago. Mine was in as good a condition as yours.
Nice when the 1992 colour remains, kinda rare as the flouro fades in the sun.

So far all the 'must do' swaps have been done. Chainset anyway.
Check the bottom bracket. If original, it will be shagged, heavy
And rusty LP30 or such like. 122mm axle length for these.
Get a un71, 72 in there.
Brake blocks...if original mt65's I would bang some kool stop or ritchey in there.
Ought to keen-up the braking power.
Sadly, they don't fetch top dollar, sometimes 40 quid or so. Shame really as they are
Striking and stink retro in a familiar way to many.

Just a sub note. Dont wash the black painted areas with harsh cleaners as
It will fade. Warm water will do. If it does look dull after use a rag and general
Spray lube to re coat and preserve, done it myself.

Nice bike. Cheers

Hi chaps i am grateful for your view on things, I agree it is is a shame as it really does ride nice and much better then a modern day bike. I have usually always ridden new stuff specialised, cannondale and whyte to name a few and have always found them bulky and not white as stiff as the frame on the Marin. I was surprised, I think judging on the comments it would be best to keep as it is and just replace as needed. I do like my bikes to look presentable and ‘straight out the box’ but if that’s not a viable option then I guess it isn’t worth bothering with just for my usual view on bikes. I’m actually more of a road rider and the Marin i bought for a bit of a quarantine project and to commute to work and back on, family rides along bridleways etc.
