Retro Newbie
Due to my wife getting a new bike through a cycle to work scheme, I'm thinking of getting my old Marin Palisades out of storage. I think it's about 18 years old but I can't quite remember how old I was when I got it. On my last trip out on the bike I binned it big time, ending up with 2 buckled wheels and a badly bent rear deraileur, it's a shimno deore 300 LX (I think) 7 speed. Everything else on the bike works fine and the wheels are easy enough to replace. I'm not sure about the deraileur, can I buy a new shimano deraileur or will I have to get an old one? The shifters are Shimano STI. Any help would be gratefully received.

sounds like a 92 ish, 300lx was the factory spec. replace the rear mech with a similar item 3,4 or 500lx will work well. post a wanted in the appropriate section on here, you wont wait too long for such a mech.
have a look at the rear mech hanger itself(non replaceable) it may need to be straightened,if not-great. but they can bend- in a little all on their own  .
good luck.

Thanks for the help. I think the hanger is ok, to be honest I haven't looked at the bike for a while. It's been in my mums kitchen for 13 years as I couldn't afford to repair it at the time. It's got the non-chip paint and the bright yellow forks, to be fair the deraileur stills works but with only 5 of the 7 gears selectable.

Sounds like a 90 or 91 to me. Let's see some pictures.

All the parts can be replaced no worries. Put an add up in the 'wanted' section. You'll be able to get exact replacements or upgrade it a bit. 8)
