Magura rim brakes, lever choices.

Hi, as title really, I'm looking at getting some Magyar rim brakes but wondered if their were any different levers I could use they won't cost more than the brakeset.

Re: Magyar rim brakes, lever choices.

Hungarian brakes? Or the Magura Hydraulic rim brakes ?
There were a few aftermarket brake lever options, but they were all rather pricey.
I think Altek made some.

Re: Magyar rim brakes, lever choices.

The joys of phone spell correction!

The trials boys made various aftermarket levers. Apart from looking trick I am not sure that they offered any more performance; possibly a small weight saving.

Re: Magyar rim brakes, lever choices.

Kooka, Altek and some modern trials options - none really offer any advantage, other than weight.

Maguras rock. :)

Re: Magyar rim brakes, lever choices.

Yeah maguras I meant lol I haven't a clue how to change title once thread is up so if it annoys you I will happily give you my log in details to change it yourself!
The reason I ask is because I prefer 2 finger levers and quite a few that I've seen are 3-4 finger levers, basically I want something of equal performance but shorter levers. Is brake hose for modern discs etc the same diameter as what's used on magura brakes? If so then would it not be possible just to use any hydraulic lever? Or is it the same case as using canti levers for v´s and not having the correct pull/push?

Thanks again.

Re: Magyar rim brakes, lever choices.

Maguras use mineral oil, some brakes use Dot fluid, you can't mix the two or the seals in either levers or calipers will die. And some levers have different piston sizes and that can affect the performance too.
Have a look at trials shops eg Tartybikes, they still stock lots of Magura stuff.

Re: Magyar rim brakes, lever choices.

The 3-4 finger levers on HS11, HS22 can be swapped for the 2 finger ones (HS33). On some variants they also changed the master cylinder piston diameters so beware.

Most disc systems have different bleed and expansion designs and different master cylinder diameters - some will doubtless work, others may not. As said, don't mix DoT and Oil types. Oil in DoT will swell the rubber fittings which then gum up; DoT in oil systems destroys the seals.

Yeah I know not to mix dot and mineral, spent a lot of time dodging paintwork with dot, excellent to use on your enemies vehicles as polish just not so great on your own!
Thanks mod for info on how to change title easy when you know how. I spent 30 minutes one night trying and got nowhere. Lol
