I've been a fan of the Tri-Pads
or Clarks / Fibrax etc also sell that style.
they're chunkier than the normal thin pad, but switch your shims around normally helps. Does make them a touch harder to get fat tyres in on older bikes, but that's a V-Brake problem in general.
or just use the plain normal pads as they work well too, even when quite worn.
By a bag of them and switch them out when needed. (though if like me, you usually remember after you've started a ride.

bloody hell prices have shot up!
used to be just over £2 for a pair of tri compound, and ~8quid for 4 pairs delivered.
