M730 chainset problem

I've encountered the same problem over the years - some bolts were slightly longer or the backs had thinner flanges or whatever. Anyway, they wouldn't tighten.

I'd just go to my LBS and pick up another set of chainring bolts for a fiver.

I also have found the dinky washers in Shimano chainsets - I think they did it as a rework procedure when they couldn't get the rings to run true. And no, they weren't on the drawings or parts list.

should there be any shims with the outer chainring bolts? they wont tighten enough to hold the rings properly but are only a fraction from being tight?

I have one set in my bike and one NOS & NIB set for spare. There is no shims on chairring bolts (no outer nor inner). Bolts can be tightened without problems to keep outer chainrings tight. Few years back I needed to replace original thick Biopace middle ring with thinner SG chainring and even then I didn't had problems to secure chainrings.

Are you sure that those bolts that you have in you set are original? If you cannot tight bolts enough to secure chainrings get shorter nuts from lbs.

Put the female nuts in a vice a file about 0.5mm of the threaded portion. A ten minute job.

there are different 'thicknesses' for want of a better word between chain rings, i.e, XT, LX etc. Look for another chainset and try the female bits in your 730.
