But you can just unclip the v brake and walk off with it? Or do you just mean as a general deterrent?

Nope, the cable is preventing that. You'd have to undo the bolt or cut the cable also

Er, no.

Just take the noodle out as you would when taking the wheel off, slip the pardlock up over the arm et voila, one free bicycle.

+1 to that. I suppose it might slow a thief down if they didn't spot it...if you were just nipping into the shop to pick up a newspaper by the time they have worked out there is a lock on it you would be back outside.

Although tieing the bike to the railings with a complex knot with a bit of rope would have been a better solution, it would confuse them into inaction (hopefully)

I bet the owner would be astonished to see someone unclip the noodle and open up the brakes

Some people have zero mechanical grasp

I bet if you did do that and move their bike, leaving behind an undamaged padlock they'd think it had been nicked by Houdini

On a similar theme, I occasionally see bikes here in Exeter which aren't actually locked up, the owners have draped other people's locks which are attached to whatever structure, across their bike!

I'll photograph the next example I see
