Lights for winter night rides

A light for riding on the road really should have a shaped beam that puts post of the light down evenly onto the road. Most of the German branded dynamo front light are like this, and a few battery lights are as well.

Lights with a circular beam just waste a lot of the light just shinning into mid air. If you're going to get a light with a circular beam, you might as well get a cheap torch or the Magicshine" type. IMHO Hope and Exposure (and others) are well overpriced.

I have some BBB BLS 62 front lamp in at the moment. 1.5W so plenty of light and you can adjust the focus to give a norow beam or a wide one. You should be able to pick them up for about £40.

Not a bad light. If I was commuting on the road then I would use these but I already have a set of MTB lights for night riding so I use them instead.

Yup, it's only my stairs at home but you get the picture.
I've got a very similar LED light with more of a spot and together they are more than ample for unlit road riding even up to 30mph down a potholed back road near me.
Takes 3AAAs, sure it doesn't go on for much over an hour(i haven't put in Ansmann's yet!), it wouldn't be suited for 'proper' off road but for on road at a budget you could buy 2 lights, an ultra fast charger + 8x1100 Ansmann AAAs for £36..bargain

If you want to go down that sort of route, I can't recommend the Ansmann charger units highly enough. Bought one - an Energy 5 model - from Rapid Electronics via mail order a couple of years ago and it's been superb value.
