Lights 2

Have you had a look at candlepowerforums? or mtbr's lighting thread? I've considered doing it myself,in fact I started a thread last year. Could probably knock out the housings but I never had the patience to learn the electronics. At the moment I'm using torches to devastating effect  its quite addictive.

What's the Ah on the Li-ion he's selling ?

Also you could also use spare powertool 6V, 9.6V, 12V 14.4V, 18V batteries, NiMH's

The wife banned me from candle-using-forums (fora).

You can get a 14.4v lithium battery and charger from smudge over on singletrack for £50 ... i did

What about trying maplin for the parts[you may also find the lamp casing there]They do loads of L/ion batteries and chargers, and more wiring and switches than you can shake a stick at 8)

I built a 50watt light about 4yrs ago. Bloody bright, but it had problems. You couldn't leave it on whilst stationary as it was too hot without any airflow over it and started to melt the housing. It was powered by a 12v 7am/h house alarm battery in a huge seatbag velcro'd to the mainframe. It was the size and weight of a brick. Despite the huge battery it would only run for 1.75hrs roughly. The upside was i already had the charger and the battery came from the house alarm when it changed during a service, so the whole light cost me about £7. :D
You could build something light and usable using a RC car battery.

This would be enough to power the 50watt for about an 1hr, or 35watt for 1.5hrs, 20watt 2.5hrs.
The battery could be fitted into a modified 750ml bottle. However the cost of the battery and charger is about £40. The light can be made for £5-7 depending on how good you want. Mine was a towball cover with a dichroic halogen in it and a simple switch.

After all that, my recommendation would be go to dealextreme or ebay and buy the bike dedicated led P7 light. Much brighter/reliable/longer run time.

I know someone who made some using ordinary halogen kitchen spot bulbs fitted into plastic waste pipe 90 elbows. They worked ok.

To be honest, if you're serious about riding at night, splash the cash and buy some decent ones. I bought some Ay-ups this year and they're great, versatile too with the headband mounts. Hideously expensive, but they transform your riding!

I built a halogen setup a couple of years ago - ran at 14.4v using a couple of NIMH packs. It was very very bright, but really not worth the effort any more given how good (and cheap) the likes of the infamous DX LED ones are.
