Left crank compatibility between Shimano Hollowtech Road/MTB

I started using a smart turbo trainer lately and I use the mountain bike on it (for various reasons). I quite fancy fitting a stages Power meter as the left crank. The question is: If I use a Shimano MTB hollowtech II chainset (M770, etc) will the axle fit a left crank from the Shimano road range (i.e. one with a Stages power meter fitted)? Normally I'd just try it myself but the MTB currently has an M970 XTR chainset which has the special fitting on the left crank.

Re:

I think you will be able to do as you plan, though most road cranks seem to be 172.5, so finding a match might not be that simple.

I think you'd be fine using an m960 chainset too, it was only m970 that had the different interface (why, it's a lovely crankset, and with that interface, engineered limited lifespan).
