Harry Patch, the last survivor of WW1 has died at the age of 111 !

If you're having a beer tonight have one for Harry, and may we never forget......

Yes it's a sad day indeed!

As a tribute to Harry and the many thousands that layed down their lives, I recommend reading The Last Fighting Tommy.

RIP Harry Patch.

Harry

I caught this on the news earlier, sad day indeed.
He still had a sense of humour as when asked what his secret to longevity was, he replied that it was down to cigarettes and women :D

Sad, but all good things come to an end. In my nursing days I had an old WWI vet in my ward. Nice chap but with an interesting tale to tell, he was wounded three times from shrapnel in the trenches but not once during his 4 years on the front did he actually see a German. Nothing ever happened on the sections of front he served, ruddy boring he said

Another sobering thought, today we are fighting in Afganistan and Iraq and for every serviceman who dies there is a public outcry etc. In the great war the British & Commonwealth forces lost more men on the first day of the battle of the Somme than have died in any conflict since the end of world war 2 combined.

Well done Harry, may you rest in glorious peace

A truly sad day, and as Al says; read The Last Fighting Tommy, a very very insightful book.

Rest in Peace Harry

A sad day indeed. My friend's Mum was the manager of the retirement home where Harry lived and knew him well. He wasn't lying about the women thing, he started seeing a new woman when he was 104 and moved her into his room at the home. She was a whipper snapper in her 80's. :D Fair play to him, a great chap who will be missed in his home town of Wells.

Harry lost several of his friends on the 22nd Sept and always treated that as his rememberance day, so every year on that date me and the wife have a Harry Patch day and raise a toast to him. Something we intend to carry on.
Bless you Harry and thank you for telling your story.

Jon

I also recommend watching The Last Tommy if you can find it (hint: torrent). Harry was interviewed extensively for it.

I was very sorry to hear of his passing.
