"US drug officials arrive in France to investigate claims that Lance Armstrong used EPO"

'An unnamed French anti-doping official has revealed that Jeff Novitzky, the US Food and Drug Administration Agent charged with investigating claims by Floyd Landis that Lance Armstrong, and others, allegedly used performance-enhancing drugs has arrived in France, possibly to examine stored urine samples Armstrong used during some of his early Tour de France wins.'

He was allowed to use 'stored' urine samples???

I cannot make sense of that subheading at all.

:(

They're just taking the piss now..............

But yes- totally nonsensical last sentence.........should read "taken from Armstrong"

You'd think the french would have tested every sample they had with every test they had to get him......

Can someone tell me what the original intended use of EPO was?

And we're surprised Armstrong may have had some in his system in the late '90s - sh*te!

Hey doc - can you give me summat that'll save my life but isn't on the banned substance list!

It boosts the body's ability to use oxygen. It allows the blood to carry more haemaglobin I believe. Sort of like using nitrous on an engine!

Evening primrose oil? You find ladies of a certain age use it.

Don't know what good it would do a cyclist.

Wasn't EPO actually designed as a treatment for cancer patients - the replenish the red blood cells damaged/killed by the chemo?

The fact that a shed load of sneaky doctors and cyclists then realised what the potential was - more red blood cells - more oxygen to muscles etc - led to it being banned.

But it is/was a 100% legit post-cancer treatment.

I think they meant to say "samples Armstrong donated/provided" rather than "samples Armstong used". Unless there's been some fraudulent Michel Pollentier-style activity going on in the past that's been covered up....

Yes, it's used to boost red cell levels during chemotherapy. Chemo hits all fast growing cells: red and white blood cells, hair, skin, fingernails.

When you have chemo, your hair falls out, nails get brittle, you get mouth ulcers etc etc. For me I had to have injections of a similar factor called GCSF, which boosted white cell levels.

Armstrong was administered EPO to get his red cell levels to recover during chemo. HOWEVER, after a few weeks all traces of EPO should have left his bloodstream...and certainly by a year or two later.
