OK, So a little write-up.
We met up at a brightened Brighton at around 9.30, where Mike Muz, Splatter paint, Kampos and friends all arrived to start on the flapjack and brownie selection. I figured the day was going to differ from plan when everyone started politely declining bits of cake from almost the outset,
The Spring Cake classic was the name of the event, not the cake dodging classic... Everyone got deducted a house-point for this, in fact I don't recall anyone actually eating an actual cake actually (except me). Flapjacks don't count. Must try harder.
Our first port of call was Carats cafe, which was really busy, so my plan to see if anyone could buy the cake from their favourite list was summarily dashed, not least because everyone was calorie dodging, but because we left as the queue was too long. We moved onto Shoreham where the first not-cake stop occurred, still, a lovely day. Some people turned up and laughed at Mike Muz's bike, which was funny to them because it was made of metal (probably) whilst their bikes were made of knitted fishing line and glue

. We crossed onto the Col du Shoreham swing-bridge (our major climb for the day at approximately 10 metres above sealevel) and onto the seafront bike path, noting that it was already pretty busy and that we would probably end up on the road later.
After the call of nature, err called, we were making scheduled time to Worthing, where a disgruntled Anthony headed towards us, having already passed us whilst we were on route and wondering where we were. All joined up, onward we traveled. We got to Sea Lane cafe where we held the 'who has the retroest bike on the run challenge'. I think Splatter Paint won this, but Kampos was scoring and has to show his working out sums. Points were deducted for things like 'unused canti-hangers' and in one case, 'the oldest part of your bike is the dog-egg attached to the tyre'. We again dodged cakes and decided to head for Littlehampton, our half way marker. This involved a few more roads but generally it was relatively quiet and we got to 'LA' about on schedule. At East beach, we stopped for 'les chips et fromage' and various other cakeless things. At this point, someone produced some suntan lotion and was called 'soft' by one of our number, who, I imagine will have in turn, been called 'burnt to a f****** crisp' himself later in the day.
After the track-standing competition (which, thank the lord, only went on for about 2 minutes but we could have been there a week), we started to head back to Brighthelmstone. Mr Muz won the track-standing but I think he also cheated by driving round in a circle. He did later do a track-stand for about 45 minutes so we let him off. He was pretty poor on the log hop tho and Splatter paint won that, or would have, if we had held it. We decided SP was the winner as he did some hops and things, plus the only logs we could find were bench shaped and the punters at the cafe looked like they weren't going to put up with stunts and amberwalls through / in their lunch.
So our return journey, as they say, was reverse of the outbound one. Traveling past the venues for LA's fabled but ultimately doomed Olympic bid,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdeH1C6SSXI and aside from a slight deviation to the route, people getting split up, a little a journey via the airport, we dodged yet further cake stops and headed home.
As we approached Carats for a second time, more cake dodging excuses were deployed and we couldn't decide which way to go or where to stop. Executive decisions made, tears mopped, we opted for a bit of traffic dodging in Brighton to stand outside Velo Cafe and marvel at the pub-a-bike. A glorious and sunny afternoon was now, definitely, making sure we knew who had forgot the suncream. As we bade farewell and departed at the end of the run, I am sure we all agreed that this had indeed, been one of the bike rides we had ever been on.
