Kona rear traingle too narrow?

Folks

Got a strange one. I have 2 1994 Kona Lava dome frames, both 19inch.

A 2.2 tyre clears on one frame but not the other.

I turned them both upside down and find that to the rear of the BB there is a bit of steel in place to brace the triange (I assume the panier would also fit onto this)

On one bike it measures about 6-7mm longer than the other, resluting in major lack of tyre clearance on one frame.

Totally baffled.

What's teh serial number on both the bikes.
Might throw up something.

Though 2.25" (measuring about 2.1, will check) tyre only just fit in my 1997 Explosif with little room for mud

Where will I find the s/n?

One bike has been powdercoated so it may be difficult to find!

a 2inch is as wide as I can go on the narrower frame.

underneath of the bottom bracket, it might show something,probably not. but it would confirm the year it was made.
2.1 retro would probably fit and been close but back then the low end frames where not realy design for modern fat tires. as for differing width i dont know. but they are mass produced low end frames so tollerances may not have been great..... or they are not both the same year like you think.
