Even though the Mc Rea bikes were "budget", I've always thought something like this would be worth doing. XT level and practical finishing kit is just the way to go - good work fella!

I'm not liking the grips or white cables, but them things are entirely personal preference, and if you like 'em, that's what counts!

just to update anyone interested. I have now finally found a rear mavic x618 rim to match the front. And as an added extra it was built with a hope blue anodised xc hub. Also put an m770 xt cassette on. So the whole thing is xt now. Nearly done. lol
