Kona Lava Dome Frame 16"

Re:

What is going on regarding the seller's explanation of filing down the Serial Number?

"Area of bottom Bracket (Pic 12) where frame number is has been filed down, yet have copy of full frame number, think the paint was bulging and decided to file the paint down before realising what I was doing (take that as you may)."

Those are very uniform file marks, that resemble the same pitch as the Bottom Bracket threads!

Oh, and the serial number they quote (F901Y0098) is a Fairly Works 1999 frame, which would be for a 1999 or 2000 model - the Lava Dome had different dropouts those two years than the frame for sale :?.

Can't be 100% sure but I believe this is a frame I once owned. Bought it as a battered, paint wise at least, frame to build for my son. And I had it powder coated that colour at Aerocoat in St Olaves, Norfolk.

If memory serves me right it was originally a dark red colour? I did have a picture somewhere but now can't find it. Yes, it probably would have been a Lava Dome. I sold it before the build was completed as i decided to give my boy my '94 Cindercone.

The 1999 Fire Mountain is Dark Red and has those Dropouts and Cable Stops, which would also be in keeping with the quoted serial number. The 1998 Lava Dome also has those Dropouts and Cable Stops, but is the beautiful Palmer Green colour, and I would be surprised if the Fairly Works were still building 1998 Lava Dome frames in 1999 - if the quoted serial number is accurate that is!

Yes, that may have been the original frame and model? Is there a chance some Lava Domes from '98 may have been left over and used in '99?
