Hi peeps,

I have a 1997 Kona Hot I am building up and I wonder if anyone is able to tell me what the correct seat post diameter is, the seat post clamp diameter and the front derailleur band diameter is. Alternatively I'll have to invest in a set of vernier calipers!! :D

Cheers, mousemat.

post 27.0 & clamp 30.0

not sure about mech... seem to remember the box said 28.6 might be wrong though

that's what my steel Kona has anyway

Kona said 27.0 for the post, but a 27 is loose in some of the high-end 97 bikes - my theory is it's because the wall thickness of the tube is less. Anyway, I have a 27.2 in my Kilauea and it fits perfectly, not tight. I could just about clamp a 27.0 enough to stop it shifting, but I think it's dodgy if a post isn't snug against the walls further down.

Go on, show us a pic of it! Is it the light green and yellow one or the stars and stripes?

Cheers for your help guys. Also I have a set of triple butted project two's but they are the suspension corrected variety. Will these be suitable for 97 Hot or should I be looking for a standard set?

Should be ok. I think '97 - '98 frames were corrected for 60 - 80mm travel forks.

I have an '03 project 2 on my '98 kilauea & it's fine :)

Well the 97 P2s were gunmetal grey as you know and I think the 97 Kilauea was the last model to be sold with the tb forks (£999 for a rigid bike!) Mind you the Hot was £800 just for the frame, but then it was custom to an extent, and I think the Kilauea was £399 for the frame and the Explosif £499.

The 97 P2 is 41.2 cm from bottom of crown race to axle centre and I think I'm right in saying they were made that length from 94 onwards, having been 39.2 prior to that. So there's no doubt that a 41cm P2 will give you a 71 degree head angle.

Whether they were justified in calling 41.2cm 'suspension-corrected' is another matter. An 80mm fork is 45cm long and even with sag gives a slacker angle than 71. Opinions differ on whether slacker than 71 is a good thing or a bad thing, but in my opinion 97 Konas handle better with the tb P2.
