Right then. 1991 because it's got the integrated seat-post clamp and - IMO what makes it more interesting - it has the K down-tube decal thanks to the copyright challenges at the time. It looks a bit smaller than a 18", but I'm not sure :?

It's a real mish-mash of parts - not the nicest build.

Yeah you're right there Al with the copyright issue. A certain Dutch bike manufacturer took exception to the the Kona name being perilously close to theirs - well one letter out of four is fairly close. Kona couldn't sell the bikes as Kona in the Netherlands and Germany at that time (1991) and created K- mountain bikes!

I agree that this is a 17" - below is my method of sizing a Kona frame. It does need to have wheels fitted and viewed at bike height from the side:

Straight line along Top Tube extending towards rear tyre:
21” tyres depth above the tyre,
20” top of tyre,
19” hits tyre,
18” just below rim,
17” well below rim,
16” almost half way to hub,
14” almost to hub,

Straight line along top of both tyres:
18” transects the junction of Seat Tube, Top Tube & Seat Stays.

Kona Headtube Length

Headtube -------Frame
90mm -----------16"
110mm ----------17" & 18"
130mm ----------19"
150mm ----------20"
195mm? ---------21”

Re:

Cheers Al.

In some instances when trying size a frame I have used this method, which does requires a largish monitor - say 22" or so. This can be used for a frame only with no wheels fitted.

Save the picture, then enlarge it with a photo editor until you have a known measurement in actual size on the monitor - say the Brake Boss to Rear Dropout, which is 250mm. Then shift and rotate the image to get all of the Seat Tube in view, which will fit diagonally across the screen. Get out the tape measure again, and post your findings on here!

Re: Kona Explosif 1991

Hi All. Sorry to be a pain. I spotted your posts on a Kona Explosif 1991.
I’ve had one since it was 12 months old. Any ideas of what it’s worth?
Thanks in advance! Have a great New Year

Hello and welcome to Retrobike.

This thread was to provide a link to a 1991 Kona Explosif for sale on e-Bay nearly 1 1/2 years ago. You would be better off asking your question on the value of yours in "The one and only "HOW MUCH IS MY xyz WORTH" forum" found here:

viewforum.php?f=78

Oh, and some pictures will always help.

Re:

Thanks Pip. I’m new to this so hadn’t a clue where to post my question. It’s only that I spotted your conversation about the Explosif (as you say, a 1 1/2 year old post)

Thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely give it ago.
Enjoy the hols
