Klein Attitude Crack in Seat Tube Clamp Area

I have a 1992 Attitude frame with a crack at the base of the seat tube clamp area. It extends both sides of the little circle at the bottom of the clamp slit.

I can see that this is a common problem and has been covered previously, however is it repairable?

The crack is either side of the vertical slit and extends 8mm one way and around 3mm the other.

The bike itself is in beautiful condition and is more than worth saving.

Hope someone can advise.

Many thanks

it will be saveable......at one end of the spectrum i would suggest it could be welded, this may look a little industrial though, and would mean a respray potentially.....mine has a similar 2mm crack that was on the frame since i have owned it...i combat the problem by using a long, non shimmed, seatpost. it is 400 mm long and sits in the seat tube down to the bottle boss....i have ridden the bike long and hard for 4ish years with no further development of the problem...other expert advice will certainly follow, but it has worked for me.... :D

it is their weak point, and not uncommon......just avoid a shimmed post, u.s.e. style.....i am admittedly a fat b@stard, but you get my point!....

a small round hole drilled at each leading edge of the crack will help prevent it propogating further and could be done as part of a weld....i would only try this as last resort though....my answer above is far less hassle and may cure your issue.....good luck!.... :D

Similar situation here.

Ive have a cracked 1990 Team.
Riden it for 4 years everyweek day with 425mm non shimmed post no probs.

If its drilled it is a bit nasty to look at depends how badly cracked.
Its possible to remove the effected part and use a standard type clamp.

this happend to my klein,

i had it welded. you have to strip the paint and clean it up. a good marine or aero welder should be able to Tig weld it and leave the weld proud so you cna sand anf file.

I would go with with a tigtectic 23 rod
Welding notes here:
http://www.nimbuscycles.co.uk/Welding_Notes.pdf

then in the oven at 160 for 18 hours and air cool, followed by 180c for 8 hours and air cooling. then do not use for 4-5 days. that will get you as close to t6 as you will get at home.
Cheers

Welding

This is great information guys. I would be worried about the drilling as it is quite a distance round. I did consider a second collar around the offending area to prevent movement but of course this is not a fix. Much prefer to get it welded if I can find someone.

Any good TIG welders in the South East anyone?

The guy I bought it from has given me a little money back which is pleasing.

Cheers guys.

If its right under the clamp bolt you can cut the clamp off and use a seatclamp. My first Attiude had the same and is still riding (I think).

Yes it is... American Classic components with Onza Porcupine tires and XT stuff, pretty down to earth stuff but still very 8) 8)
