Karma Stumpjumper F+F

Not quite as good as the title suggests, please read this so you know what you’re getting!

This is a 1996 Specialized Stumpjumper frame with a period correct Direct Drive fork. The fork isn’t original to the frame but is from another Stumpjumper of the same year. It’s made of Tange Prestige and it’s 17 inches in size. This was bought as a project ages ago and was in a bad way when I got it (you could say it’s only marginally better now). The frame was very rusty and in bad shape cosmetically. I had intended to do a full works restoration, lack of motivation got in the way. What was done was sorting the rust out - it was shot blasted and had a ton of Kurust poured into it. It was also powdercoated orange (not my choice).

The frame went straight to powdercoating after the shot blast, against my wishes. Problem with that is the frame came back powdercoated showing a load of dents, and the chainstay bridge had disintegrated because it was so rusty. I had intended to braze the dents up and put a new chainstay bridge in before it was painted. The powdercoat was terrible anyway, so I removed what was left of the chainstay bridge and filled the dents with epoxy (I was losing interest at this point). Then I rubbed the powdercoat down and did a half-arsed job of priming it. It hasn’t been touched since.

So there you go, it’s an old Stumpjumper frame and fork that’s usable but ugly. It doesn’t have a chainstay bridge anymore, so you might not want to be doing hard offroad riding or massive 360s on it unless you sort it out. That said, it’s sound and will be fine for everything from pootling to light use, so it’d be a shame to scrap it.

Don’t see the point in doing a raffle or anything like that on this, it’s not worth it. But I’d kind of like it to go to someone who’ll finish the job I didn’t start very well and get it built up and riding again, i.e. do a bit of a build thread. When I’ve karma’d stuff on Retrobike before, it’s often gone to someone who doesn’t actually post very often, if ever. And that’s fine, I’d just like to see if anything happens to this one. That said, I can’t dictate what you do with it when it’s not mine anymore, it’s up to you.

How do you get it? I’d prefer collection or a local handover, meeting half way or whatever. I don’t even mind delivering it to you within reason. I’m in Wakefield, near Leeds. I’ll post it if I have to or if you’re far away and feel passionate about owning it. But I’d prefer not to because boxing it up and arranging postage is a pain, so local folk will get preferential treatment. Sorry about that.
