Right then so we are saying its just really springs and cartridges ? no oil actually in the legs ? looks like I'll have my tea and have a go... thanks fellas. I suppose if anything goes 'pop' spares are readily available ? should have had a go at servicing suspension years ago :roll: :roll:

I can see why I like rigids they are no problem to sevice

the only oil in the leg "should" be sealed in the cartridge...

Dead easy to service, give it all a good clean out and re grease it with a non lithium based grease ( as lithium grease makes the elastomers go hard ) bung it all back together and away you go.

Used to have a pair, very easy, remember to loosen lower leg bolts and tap with a hammer to separate the inner legs from the outers. The cartridges are worth doing........but you need a lot of patience and the help of a small humming bird to refill them !

If I just want to strip them for the legs to be sprayed , I should'nt need to touch the cartridges should I ?

Out of interest what oil is recommended to refill the cartridges ..

Also does it make any difference where the adjusters on the top of the fork legs are positioned prior to stripping ?

Sorry for the 1001 questions, just these will be the first sus forks I have ever taken apart, so wont to be prepared for springs and oils flying all over...

Was going to give it go tonight but been sorting my next project out

if they are going to be sprayed and then cooked , you might want to take cartridge out .

to take forks apart simply :

undo the plastic top gently , so you can empty the legs . you should only have cartridge left now .

at the bottom of the forks there are some bolts , undo them 3 or 4 turns and give gentle tap with a mallet . finish to undo the bolts and that should separate the legs from the stanchions .

undo the clips and cartridge will come out .

yep Chris you are right - remove, but no need to touch any further. Its a self contained unit.

Just make sure if you are getting them sprayed that the bushes aren't shagged first, and if they are media blasted you plug all bottom holes and top stanchion holes well.

If you do have a go at the cartridges some time i know one is 5wt........i'm sure one was for compression and the other rebound. That was the great thing about them you could change the oil weight to suit your riding........i can't remember if there was another version where the cartridges were sealed and you couldn't mess with them. I think they were colour coded ? so you didn't end up putting them back in the wrong leg. Could someone confirm this as it was a while ago when i had some.
