It's harvest time!!

Lollipops

Retro Guru
Last weekend I was up at my bf's, and it was kinda time to pick/dig up some of the veges that I'd sown earlier this year, and I reckon we got a pretty good load!! I just wish I'd taken a pic of the peas that I picked about 3 weeks ago ... the bowl was overflowing!! But, c'est la vie, these are just the remnants left on the plants ... :(

He's only got a small back garden, and so an even smaller veg plot ... but I reckon we didn't do too badly overall, considering the amount of wood-pigeons determined to eat every seedling that dared poke its nose above the ground!! We had a stupid amount of runner beans, the peas were brill up til a few weeks ago, the carrots did "okay" I guess (stoney soil, not good!), the potatoes were from a coupla taters that I found sprouting in the back of his cupboard and shoved in the ground to see what would happen (NO idea what variety!!), and the beetroot is just the thinnings from the row ... not bad!!

How bout everyone else then? How have your veges been doing this year and what have you been growing? What successes (and failures?!) have you had?

L x

(edit ... p.s. my failures were lettuces (bloody pigeons!), rocket and mustard (bolted before I got to them!!) and strawberries ... the plants are doing fab but the blackbirds & pigeons beat me to the fruit ... next year it's either netting or the air rifle!! Lol!!

Sorry - i haven't had time to photo my spuds
However as well as pigeons we have rabbits and deerz

So if they ever leave our veg alone for long enough we might tackle one of les animeaux aussi pour un balanced meal

Nice beetroots BTW

Tidy veg. 8) All looks healthy and edible
This isn't as easy as it looks, yet again the 2009 window sill crop failz0rsed again. Tommys were too compacted and look like death warmed up. And what's with the little flies stuck to the stems?
Corriander looked like it had been in a fire. Cayene peppers leaves look healthy though fingers crossed....

Could do with a garden really.

I ate some of my dad's potatoes the other day.
They were just peelings that were buried last year.
Oh, how I wish I had a garden, at least one that kids couldn't knock off my roof. :(

Our tomatoes are delicious and the cucumbers are just about there. The cabbage we had was jolly good but the sweetcorn growing between them is a bit 50/50. Lettuces all bolted and the badgers dug up all the carrots trying to find works or something, we replanted but they never recovered. Our strawberries need moving to a sunnier spot but he raspberries were great whilst they lasted. The snails got the beans and peas before they really took off.

This year I have mostly been growing:

Beetroot
Red Onions
Leeks
Cherry Toms
Big Toms
Broad Beans
Runner Beans
Courgette
Melon
Pumpkin
Peas
Chilis
Red Pepper

All grown in pots and tubs of various sizes on the patio

Cant you find a mooring that is pretty inaccessible from one side at least?,failing that ,buy a bit of a plot and plant or fence it to create a separate garden area

PS leave meter long strips of barbed wire on the routes they scooter up and down, a kind of improvised stop stick.

Works against cyclists

Actually, I own a bit of the Thames, just outside Wallingford. I hardly ever move the boat there, though, it's in the middle of nowhere. The problem is, boats move!
Mind you, tomorrow I'm going to pick blackberries, and make a new batch of wine. Yummy.

Sounds fun, especially when its ready    ,how strong do you make it?
How about a blackberry liqueur, something to fortify you during winter commutes/rides?.
And having a mooring in the middle of nowhere is almost like fate  you can brew up illegally and theres no chance of getting busted

Which side of Wallingford is the mooring Chris? up near the pilbox or down the other way[google earth  ]
