Italian Job

Hi Guys,

I bought this bike with the intention of it becoming a donor bike for another project! However I am a keen to find out if anyone would be able to shed some light on it's history before splitting?

I believe like some other Italian brands, they perhaps made decent road bikes but their venture into the world of MTB's didn't go so well. Of course I could be completely wrong

There does seem to be particular brands that although the frames weren't great, they would happily throw a complete XT groupset at their top of the range machine - which is always good for us lot on the hunt for a bargain :D

Having said all that I think it looks quite nice :D

Thank Guys,

For your response, That would make complete sense about the frame, its in very good condition and the colours are very bright for its age and excellent group set. I have been torn as to splitting the bike.

Atala certainly did and might still do, make mopeds. Bicycles and mopeds are broadly similar so seems likely they made/make both.

Certainly 70s and 80s road bikes...usually blue and white horizontal bands on the jersey.

You just need the 'tash now...Urs Freuler 1984:

Definitely not he finest specimen of Italian brand, Atala is a historical company (as you can see from the proud "campione del mondo" - world champion - sticker) which had turned to low end and city bikes by the beginning of the nineties. With the explosion of Mtbs they tried to jump on the train and ended up launching a full line of ATBs, ranging from cheap models up to middle-high end ones.

The one you have was the top steel model, while the most expensive one had an alu frame. Curiously, I've never seen a XT equipped steel Atala... this must be the 1990 model, since the 1991 mounted a dx gruppo.

Oria Steel were a popular tube supplier, they also offered some fine pipes (cromovan, they were called, from), but the ones on the lugged bike you have were quite low end.

For what I remember, the bikes were too heavy, had short top tubes, but were overbuilt and could take quite a beating.

Well, I think this is all I know....

Thanks for the information, that's interesting to know. She does have some wight behind her, so you could give it some stick.

Do you think I would get much for the frame? Is there much interest in these.
