Is there a place for sentiment?

Coming to the end of my time in this current job and will not need my commuter in its current role. Had the old girl since '93 and tempted to show her some love via a trip to Argos and £180 to bling her up and then put her back off road with a modern twist.

Trouble is, the other half of me wants to sell the frame and combine that with the £180 I would have spent to buy something modern (maybe a Sanderson Life) to replace it.

I just worry about parting with her, regretting it and paying more to buy her back only to find out that I really wanted a modern frame all along.

Arrrrggghhh, only way forward is to break her up and put the frame in the loft just so I don't regret it in the future!

Anyone been through something similar?

Yes.

New frames will be old frames eventually, and then you'll get one for the price of a pint.

Why Argos for a respray? You can say where all the scratches on your frame came from, what looks better than that?

Dont sell if you dont have to.

If a bike has memories, keep it. I have had my RTS from new and can tell you everywhere its been and how each scuff occured. Its been dressed in many a different way, yet I'd never sell it. I have thought about it, even offered it up for swaps on here, but saw sense in the end.

Depends what it is really. I'd not bother getting a low end marin/gt/kona whatever refinished. If it something nice then why not.

My Commuter is a 94 Kona kona kilauea, with track ends welded on about 8 years ago to SS it, repainted in pale pink.

It looks fugly, it has a crack that runs 1/2 way round the seat tube, two more cracks propagating out of the cable stops on the top tube, more missing paint than I care to mention, and a slightly squiffy rear triangle from my manly leg torque (OK so actually a run in with metro...but hey...)

I will never get rid of it, I still ride it every day, when it eventually dies it's going on the wall.

If it's about sentiment then I think sometimes it is better to keep a totally worn out frame on the wall, in shed etc. than spend money getting it re-finished and then not riding it.

All the imperfections and scars will jog more memories than getting it re-finished ever will....

Of course there is a place for sentiment.

Thats why we are all on retro bikes, not the newest thing in the shops.

Every bike I own has a sentimental value, to the point where 2 are like treasured!

(although I must admit I may buy a road bike for the winter...)

Too right, I couldn't bring myself to sell my Claudbutler after owning it for about 17 years and now it is back the way it should be I am pretty chuffed.

Carl.

pish posh

oooh im fuming, lol, I expected better from you Mr John the Guvnor with all that bike snobbery

wouldnt bother with a bottom end marin indeed, no room for sentiment pish posh,

I would rather sell my wife and kids than my Marin, but could cope if i had to sell my modern cove, or modernish hack bike.

oh and here she is all shiny

 That's the nicest Muirwoods I've ever seen!

As John said, it does depend what it is - I wouldn't throw a $300 coat of paint on a bike worth 1/2 that.
