Is Retro really the way forward!? Your thoughts

Old school vs. New school

Maybe i haven't learned to adjust and move with the times but looking back some 10-20 years ago and comparing bikes of then and now, some of days bikes just don't appeal to me.

There's something about the bikes of today i just don't like and i don't know what it is... :?

Why Retro? :)

Rose tinted specs, the nostalgia bug, call it what you will but it happens to us all as you age. Brain mass reduces as you age and certain characteristics of your mind become stronger and others are lost.
Consequently old familiar bikes are part of who you were at your prime and you cant grasp new stuff.
New stuff is better even if you dont believe it. If old stuff was better we'd all still be living in caves with flint tools. Everything moves forward but people from each generation are left behind believing there time was the best.
As long as your happy, who cares 8)

Well I like retro so long as it good and I like modern bikes with a retro feel and I have liked some of the throughly modern bikes I have riden but I never have been able to afford them.

Going to do the Devils Dyke to Eastbourne on my 2009 Kula soon. I completed the ride last weekend for the BHF on by Butler which was faultless throughout the ride (Maguras were fine on the descents and the Z2 Atoms were stiff and provided enough travel) but I felt I could have used the lower gearing offered by the 27 speed XT setup on the Kula.
I have decided I prefer the lower riding position of the Butler though and am looking for a set of flat bars and a lower/slightly longer stem for the Kula.
Will keep riding the retro for the less agressive stuff and general summer use but for more extreme stuff and over the Winter i'll be on the Kona.

Carl.

No need for a modern v retro or 'old' thread[unless you really want to]
Personally i think it pointless as its obvious that modern is better, but not in every part of a bicycle :?
For instance- Suspension, either front or full has had by far a huge improvement, in weight, travel length, price but at the expense of high maintenance to keep it working whereas early forks like Z series could easily reach years between services and still work flawlessly
Frames are lighter but are they stronger :?
Personally i dont think i'll see these modern super lightweight alloy or carbon bikes around in 15yrs :? Certainly not in one piece :?

Well it has been a few days since there's been a 'retro vs modern' thread.

True.

Now tell me, what exactly is a trail centre again...?

Durin' the Warw...

price comes into play by the looks of it , depending what your after , you can pick up a good quality retro bike to suit ones needs, the modern alternative is far more then i'm able/willing to pay

Sorry, you're right Dyna-Ti it's typical of of one to post such thread, i'm sure it's been asked many times.

I didn't expect a reply from someone who's probably answered that question a million times in the past...

The last time i was so involved in bikes was about 15 years ago when i was 10-12 years old until i became interested in other things... i've not long got back into biking so i've got a lot to catch up on :)
