Anyone know if the Apple iPhone 3GS 16gb is available new as GSM yet? (Basically unlocked and contract free)

Not according to the Apple Store. I didn't think it was ever gonna be available SIM free, did they do it for the 3G?

I was thinking that now the exclusivity period with 02 has ended then GSM phones will be available too.

Apple store are showing pay & go phones for 02 and Orange (vodafone is in january), I wonder if they are locked with a pay & go phone? http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/s ... TM3NDkwMjA

For the missus to upgrade it's an extra £10 a month for 18 months and then £189 to buy the phone, so a total of £369 extra. She never uses the minutes and text as it is now, so the higher plan is just a waste of money. So if the phone costs 400odd then its worth just buying the phone and changing her current plan to include more/unlimited data. And then knowing you can change the contract and not be tied for 18/24 months (There are great sim only deals)

If you get my logic :?

Anyone had any experience with buying the iphone from other sources? such as

:D

Here in the US there's a lot of internet advertising for "unlocked" iPhones. I don't know whether the hack they use to unlock the iPhone is specific to AT&T or whether you could do it for a non-US iPhone as well. If you Google "how to unlock an iPhone", you should find plenty to read about it.

Hmmmm, play.com sells one so that must be legit. The problem with hacked ones is that you can't update the OS without needing to unlock it again.

Didn't really want a hacked one, as I've heard of people having problems like you say. As long as the phone is out of contract then there is no problem unlocking/hacking it, but during the contract period the phone still belongs to the provider, hence the high monthly contract payments, it's just credit to buy the phone. So got to be careful buying unlocked "new" ones.

When I lived in Spain for a while, their contracts work very differently, you pay virtually full price for a phone, i paid 400euros for a decent one back then, and the contract was 9euros a month minimum charge. I think a lot of places around the world work like this, it's only us who are in love with credit

Anyway, i'll do a little more research into these unlocked ones.

I see ads here for "Apple factory unlocked international phones". They're the most expensive unlocked phones at around $1,000. I would think that Apple must have such an option though for international business travelers.
