Retro Guru
Hi all :D could do with some advise from you wise ones. Due to health probs i'm finding my 1991 Kona Cinder Cone very painfull to ride these days with it being rigid. So i'm thinking about coverting it into a hardtail & was wondering what the max fork travel I could get away with on this frame. If I can I would like to use a more modern sus fork which would take hydro brakes. Now this brings me onto my next Q does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to have a rear hydro brake mount fitted ? I know this isn't in keeping with all things retro & I will prob go to 9 speed at the same time but i've had the bike 20 years & am finding it hard to sell the bike so thought I might be able to bring it upto date

Honestly buy a later frame.

They are not corrected in any way for suspension so ~40mm suspension would be the norm for these. You'll not get tabs on them ;)

If you go longer the bikes looses it's ride or so for the bikes I've tried of that era and put 60mm forks and 80mm forks. You can ride it but it just feels wrong to me and moving back to 40mm suspension made the bikes feel correct and in fact comfier for me.

Use the Kona for the road and buy a late 90's/early 00's frame with tabs and stuff there if you want to stay to older bikes.
