I've never been a fan of Shimano. BITD bought any thing but. But now i'm back in to Mtbing. The 2007 kit is just so well made & finished. And not heavy either. Which you certainly couldn't say that about BITD. It works so well. gears change under pressure. And the spd is just sweet. Never used toe straps. Saw spd and know thats just the way to go.
I still think they have got too big just like that other company MS in computers

the analogy doesn't quite work but maybe if shimano = ms then campag = apple. Not sure what that makes sram.

that makes sram a scam like there quality and price where as shimano is so sweet and campagnolo are so unstable as a company when it comes to control of pricing and export (ie there a joke).

SRAM is the government breaking up MicroSofts monopoly. The new shimano stuff is nice but i don't think it has the same quality feel that you get from a XO kit. It might just be me but the XO triggers are the nicest shifters i've ever used (even better then my 07 Record) If you havn't tried em you really should.

I don't think Shimano == MS because in stark contrast to MS, most Shimano stuff works exceptionally well (IME) and is very reasonably priced :)

Having said that, I've had little to do with post-2000 Shimano gear so it is just possible things have changed in the past 8 years or so :)

The only thing I have against Shimano is that while some stuff is fantastic (still running a rear LX hub after 20,000 off road miles, and thumbies used on my MTB since 1990) other bits like chainrings seem to be made of cardboard - TA and Campag are sooooooo much better.
