hi
was the pic a production cannondale? i have a couple of old cannondales, looks like a 6 speed suntour freewheel, rm20's rims the cranks are obviously xt's like you already have. diacombe 990 rear brake. specialized groundcontrol tyres. original cannondale stem.
that is probably a beast of the east with the higher BB.

i'd tend to try to find a nitto bar and suntour xc post and stem.
your bike is mint already...

i can understand the memory kicking into action and wanting to get that bike you can still smell in the shop. i have just completed a 91 khs montana team in the same vein.

:)

Hi mate, I have a 1989 red shred currently in progress, mine is an SM900. If its the 1988 one you want to build, then it is indeed full Deore XT, but the main stumbling block I think you are going to have is the frame...... The red shred was the only frame to have the sloping top tube and high bottom bracket in the years it was made (1988 'SM1000', 1989 'SM900' (and also SM600 had sloping tt according to the brochure) and 1990 'SM800') so you would need to find an actual red shred frame..... (or an 89 SM600). As i'm sure you know the 'red shred' became the 'beast of the east' in 1991. The bikes had XT in 88, DX in 89 and LX in 90, but I have gone for a slightly less original spec.

I hope this is of some use to you mate, I have also found the vintage cannondale website very useful, although i'm sure you know about it:

1988 Cannondale MTB frames

I own a 1988 Sm700 frame which I am currently restoring. This has a Sloping top tube and a high BB height. I think it shares the same frame geometry with the Sm1000 Red shred frame from the same year - could any one verify?. The Sm600 from 1988 has a sloping top tube but has a smaller rear triangle for the 24" rear wheel and the Sm500 is horizontal top tube.

You're absolutely right, the SM500 had a horizontal top tube that year, but the three other bikes in the mtb range that year (SM600, SM700 and SM1000 'red shred') all shared the same geometry. In 1989 the only bikes with the sloping tt and high bb were the SM900 'red shred and the SM600, and by 1990 (the last year the 'red shred' was produced) the SM800 'red shred was the only model in the range with those features. I stand corrected, you learn something new every day!

You're not seriously thinking about painting over that luscious black are you?

no cause its the wrong frame for this project so i would sell it.
