One other question ❓- will this fork crown race at the bottom need to be tapped out or would it have been part of the forks ? It seems to be a kind of copper colour but not sure if it would have been part of the fork - surely not ?? Thanks.
If you don't have the special tools. Put the lock nut on the steerer, screw it on fully. It doesn't need to be tight, place nut on bench ie forks upside down. Use a copper or alloy drift/punch and carefully strike the front and rear of the crown race. It will come off. The copper colour is probably the copper plate under the chrome.

Great stuff - I'll have a go at that - just didn't want to start tapping where I wasn't meant to. Thanks 👍

It'll be pressed on. The copper colour might be what was under the nickel or chrome plate to make it stick. Tap it off gently so you don't damage it and so you'll be able to press it back on.

Edit: missed a few replies there

Thanks for your advice folks. Fork Crown Race popped off no problem once tapped. Got it so can replace. Taking the black paint of most stuff is revealing not much chrome other than the rear rim which is a German Schurmann O55 26 and 1-3/8 rim. The front rim is corroded and pretty done in so would like to switch the Dyno hub onto a new rim and spokes which will also be a first for me.
