hub nuts

The nut that goes between the forkend and the cone has gone PING and snapped in half. Can I replace it with some more washers or is that unsafe? It's the front hub, with quick release.

Are those made of unobtainium? If not and "repair" isn't meant to save You walk home, then I'll be inclined to safe side and have locknut tightened against cone with right amount of play. It's not only safer, but also more comfortable in case of puncture.

Without a lock nut you cannot keep the cone adjusted. Most front hubs are 9mm x 26TPI. It is poosible to use the wheel without the lock nut, but you will need a small amont of slack in the cones or you will not know the cones are over tight.

I confess to riding it home with nothing put on to bodge it. QR wouldn't tighten so I leaned over the front as hard I could to try and hold the wheel in with my body weight. It was a bit wobbly.

so 9mm axle... I'll measure the thickness of the locknut and see what I can scrounge from somewhere.
