How thick are carbon seat post walls?

Hi all,

I'd like to try my hand at a homemade seat post and have all the bits from an old USE around.

But as I don't have a carbon post, I'd like to know what their wall thickness is? - I know this is vague and model dependent, but...

The tube I am looking at is;

The wall thickness is 1.6mm

That doesn't seem enough, is it?

If not where could I get a thicker 25.4mm OD tube?

I don't use a carbon seatpost right now, but my Ritchey WCS Rizers seem to be around 1.5mm at the ends.

My Thorn ones are probably less, but they have a recessed shim so it is hard to be sure.

Others I haven't checked I would guess are similar.

Are you going to use the clamp from an old post?

Well basically the plan is to drill a hole in a tube and miter it to fit the USE clamp.

Simple? I hope so.

I had a no-name carbon seatpost - the tube walls were quite thick (2mm+) - it snapped :shock:

I have just sold it so cant check for sure ...

But my USE was about 3 to 4mm

My USE carbon post has 3.5mm thick walls...

If you can source it, and bear with me here, I'd suggest using the carbon tubes they use for artificial lower limbs nowadays. The tube diameter is around what you're looking for at 25-30mm, they're engineered to take a minimum of 3-4x body weight, and they're surprisingly light!! About 150gr for a good 400mm length. Try googling someone like RSL Steeper.

I have a vague memory of a carbon seat-post that had an aluminium sleeve inside at top. It was probably a USE one as I think it was drilled and mitred as you propose doing to take USE clamp. You do mean the in line clamp, don't you?
As I said a vague memory, can't recall where I saw it, on here or eBay, don't know.
