How old is this Scapin?

Hi all,

Have just bought this Scapin Atec - paid £120 - needs some work! On the plus side there is a rear Campag Delta brake and tubing is Columbus SLX.

Would like to refit using age related parts - but not sure how old it is. I can't work out what is original and whats not.

The wheels are Series 1 Dura-ace with gold anodised Mavic tub rims, Stronglight headset, Campag Athena chainset & Brake levers, Chorus Rear / Front mech and Seat stem, 3ttt H/bar stem, ITM H/bars, No name front brake,

I can't help feeling the paint job (marbling / drizzle effect) is late 80's early 90's - your input appreciated.

Fork style, internal routing and paint puts it in the 90's, mind you that's a bit after my era.........which is the 70s'

And that's where those shimano hubs and "stabby" QR levered front brake should be........attached to a 70's machine, one of mine perhaps :D

hi, looks like a great bargain the frame alone must be worth more than £200 !

a reader is doing a build thread on a scapin at the mo .
i just wondered what number sprockets[free wheel ?] you had on the rear hub and what the rear drop out width is.thats usually a good clue to the age of the intended rear hubs.
i reckon the athena shifters are 8sp early 90/s[record c era ] and your beautiful straight forks i saw in the tdf when it came to england 1994 [but that does'nt mean they are original as a set .
h/bar stem looks long watch your back[ache]looks like you v got some polished chrome on the head tube lug any chance a photo in daylight .

Thanks for input oonaf - the rear spacing is 126mm and currently the freewheel is a 7 speed Maillard, the frame is fully chromed underneath - was considering stripping it!

I'll post some more photos in daylight later.

yeah, I to would have said fork crown etc plus graphics would make this frame early to mid 90's

hi yes but thats a bit of a tease ,having rear drop outs made for early 80/s 126mm rear hub spacing but built in the early 90/s when 130mm for ergo and sti was the latest.
Is it simply a case of the frame builder was'nt quite 'clued up ' a bit stuck in his ways or the intended rider
had given specific instructions.?
i know 531 can be reset does any one know if slx can be ?
[delta brakes are being advertised ' buy now ' for quite a lot at the mo ]

If its always had a 126mm wheel in, eventually it won't spring back to 130mm and will kinda coldset itself to 126, if that makes sense.
Well that's my theory

thanks. pigman, as we are talking only 2mm each side and winding 'in' thats prob what has happend. :)
interesting the Athena 8s index with the 7s freewheel. There is such a mix of 70/s to 90s components here, i love those 8s shifters with the solid shift up lever's.
i like the paint and decals and that mavic protecting sticker .
