Hope Hed Doctor

Hi - I wonder if anyone can help before I go doo-lally.

I bought a hed-doctor to use with a 1 1/8th carbon road fork (steerer is carbon too).

The thing is that the Hed-Doctor won't fit in the steerer. I've actually dismantled the Doctor so that I've just got the expanding ring and even when fully compressed it's too big for the steerer.

Has my steerer got a tiny internal diameter, or is there something wrong with the Hed Doctor -wedge machined too big? I'm all puzzled!

Yes I have come across this same problem before.. does the actual centre section fit in, but when the 'wings' are attached with the rubber clip, it does'nt ?

There is a limit on internal diameters of steerer for these, I ran into the same problem and had to resort to a star fangled. I guesss with any steerer made of anything other than steel the diameter can be way different.

Yup.

They tend to only work on steel steerers.

Not sure if they do one for 1" headsets? That might work. :?

shouldn't really be using a head doctor with a carbon steerer. need a carbon specific thing (M:part make one). Very similar to a head doctor but has tiny teeth (for want of a better word) on the outside. I'm using an fsa one

Most forks with carbon steerers are supplied with the correct plug for fitting.

DO NOT use a normal Ahead Star fangled nut. You risk crushing the steerer.

Don't you mean split the steerer?

The main reason not to use a star nut, or anything with sharp edges, in carbon fork steerers is that the sharp edges will score the carbon thus weakening it.

The best type of plugs are the rubber expanding type, similar to a Hope bar end plug.

Well both. You might crush the steerer when tightening the stem - before it splits...
Or it might split before it gets crushed...

But either way, it's bad news.

Thanks chaps - I'm not quite daft enough to bash a star nut in to a carbon steerer 8-)

I think I'll chuck the hed doctor in the spares drawer and order a new bung.
