Honestly...it really is hard work!

Hard day at work yesterday...up a silly o'clock to attend a trade tasting in London.
Tasted nearly 120 wines which really is tiring...no honestly. Thankfully the hosts had laid on a smorgasbord of fine cheese/bread/meat etc...so regular palate resting intervals were order of the day.
Some very good wines but the money-no-object stars were:-
2008 Didier Dagueneau Pouilly Fume Silex (retail about £100) ...simply stunning wine
and two superb burgundies from Hubert Lamy
2008 St Aubin La Princee
2008 Puligny Montrachet Les Tremblots
both very fine wines and very reasonable.

Three tastings next week :D

Have you ever thought of doing mail order HB?? We could have a HB recommended wine of the week. I do enjoy wines but a lack of knowledge and being a creature of habit I tend to find a good one and stick to it (still enjoying Barolo). It would be nice to broaden ones horizons and become a little more adventurous.

Nothing wrong with sticking to Barolo....fantastic wine (the proper ones...not the £10 supermarket ones), but yes, your palate can get 'fixed' if you stay on one flavour profile.
If my plans bear fruit and I'm an Indy soon, I would consider mail order but the packaging and shipping is expensive unless you are volume shippers.

One I tried that I think you would like is the 2006 Vina Pedrosa Crianza Ribera del Duero...if you can find it :D

And that's the problem- finding stuff. The main wine merchant in my town has closed shop and all we now have is the supermarket or a corner shop with the usual sub £8 fare. To be fair our local Morrisons does occasionally have a few decent tipples but nothing outstanding. I can't stand driving into Newcastle for any reason let alone to buy wine so that's out of the question. Currently I'm relying on friends and customers who compete in French and Italian rallies and races to bring back the odd case of plonk.
One such customer has just returned from Angouleme with a boot full which I look forward to seeing.

Mmmmmhhhh.

I am a huge wine buff, can't get through the week without a crate or two of Buckfast.

I don't think I could taste 20 wines in such a short time span, let alone over a tonne!

How do you cleanse your palate?

:)
